Studio mod. 324 knitting machine

Studio mod. 324 knitting machine is a standard-gauge knitting machine with 200 needles, 4.5 mm apart. In features a punchcard reading mechanism, which helps to select the needles according to the punchcard pattern and create various fabrics.

Studio mod. 324 is identical to Studio mod. 323 and Studio mod. 321 knitting machines. Thus, read the corresponding blog posts.

I recently had a privilege to service and knit on Studio mod. 324 and here are my first-hand observations (see the video of my tests and Studio mod. 324 machine in action).

I like that the plastic end caps on the needlebed do not have plastic rivets but attach using metal screw (there is a corresponding metal plate inside the grooves of the end caps for a more secure connection). I am not sure if this is for all Singer/Silver Reed/Studio/Empisal models because Empisal Knitmaster model 324 I recently also worked on, had the usual plastic rivets. Maybe depends on where the machines were assembled? For example studio mod. 323 also have metallic screws instead of plastic rivets to connect end caps to the metal case.

I like that there is only one plastic cover on the needlebed: on top of the punchcard reader. It makes the machine so less fragile. However, cleaning inside becomes a bit more complicated: I had to reach with a long brush into all the crevices instead of just reaching and vacuuming (like later models) from the top. Additionally, later models optimize all this “lost” space and make either the tool tray or built-in toolbox instead of simple metal cover for the back of the needlebed.

I like a bit more how the plastic cover is attached to the carriage: less more probabilities for sticking out plastic parts to break (more on that later).

Overall, I am impressed how robust this (and similar models) machine is.
